The original Liero data and binary files by Joosa Riekkinen were released available under the WTFPL license. The new versions are released by Gliptic, although Joosa Riekkinen endorses them as official. In 2009, 'classic' Liero was officially merged with the OpenLiero project upon the release of Liero 1.34 (not to be confused with the total conversion by that name). Community developmentsĭespite this, and with the author's approval, the Liero community has distributed several altered (or hacked) versions of the game through the LieroCDC, and others.

However, the author lost the Pascal source code in a hard disk crash, and due to the lack of backup, no new 'classic' versions have been released since. The original Liero's latest version was 1.33, which was released in 1999. Liero was inspired by the previous Freeware game MoleZ, and took many weapons and sounds from its precursor. Joosa Riekkinen developed Liero as DOS game with the first version released in 1998. It can be played by two human players simultaneously in split screen or in a single player mode against the game's artificial intelligence, although the game's popularity is derived mostly from the fast-paced player-vs.-player action it provides. The gameplay mode can be deathmatch, Game of Tag or Capture the Flag. Liero depends all on timing and swift maneuverability.

Key factors include the reload rate of each weapon and how fast they shoot, whereas in most others include how much ammo a gun sports and how frequent more ammo for that gun can be found. Unlike most side-scrolling deathmatch games, the weapons in Liero have infinite ammo. Before playing, you can select certain weapons to be available only in bonuses, in the entire game, or completely disabled. It is also possible to replace one of your five weapons by picking up bonuses. While playing, there are health power-ups to heal your worm. This grappling hook-like device substitutes for jetpacks and can even latch onto the enemy worm to drag him closer to his foe. In addition to the weaponry, each player has a ninja rope which can be used to move faster through the map. Most of the terrain, except for indestructible rocks, may be dug or destroyed by explosions. Team Deathmatches, in particular, are just awesome.In Liero, two worms fight each other to death for score (or frags) using a choice of five weapons from a total of 40 in a two-dimensional map. It doesn't take long to connect to the game servers and there are always plenty of competitors ready to make you sweat. The online gameplay is where this game stands out, though. Though it offers only modest graphics, the game manages to create a nostalgic gaming environment that you'll like right away. Although the game isn't hard, you will need a bit of time to familiarize yourself with the basic controls, especially moving around using a ninja rope. The game settings let you set max kills, lives, and time, as well as bonuses.

As with traditional Worm games, you have a wide choice of weapons at your disposal such as a minigun, bazooka, napalm, mines, grenades, and similar, from which you can pick five. We recommend that you start practicing your shooting skills using available weapons in Local Play first, by competing against bots.

OpenLierox for Mac lets you choose between Local Play and Net Play. Although the game's 2D graphics aren't too impressive, the gameplay is loads of fun and draws you in right away. OpenLierox for Mac takes the classic gameplay of Liero and Worms, enhances it with some extra features like customizable weapons, levels, and characters, and packs it in an exciting online gaming experience - offering you hours of entertainment.
